Squirrels are herbivorous and their foods are mainly fruits, seeds, nuts, dried corn, fungi, mushroom, and among many others. When there is no food or there is food scarcity, they may feed on eggs, smaller mammals, and young birds. Most of the times, squirrels have been caught killing mice, birds, and rats. It is so unbelievable that these cute and friendly squirrels kill and feed on mice, rats, and birds. When birds see squirrels, they flee from their nests leaving all their eggs behind because of fear. All the eggs and small left behind during the raid are meals for them. They even kill the big birds if they find any. Normally, they give a very cool first impression and you may think that they cannot hurt a fly.
There is a species of squirrels that feed on other squirrels as well. They are known as the gray squirrel. There is another species known as the flying squirrel which is omnivorous in nature and feeds on anything that comes their way. Flying squirrels lives on trees and are mostly woodpeckers. They move from one to another and are also known to be, living in woodlands and forests. However, almost all of them feed on dead animal remains not leaving out the mice, rats, birds and all insects’ remains. It is now clear that squirrels kill rats and mice which are also destructive. The question is, do you want to keep squirrels around because they deal with these destructive rodents?

Squirrel Diseases
There is no fatal disease that they transmit although they do hold parasites and this may end up badly. The droppings left behind can also lead to serious diseases that may pose a great risk to human’s health. Another annoying factor is that they kill these beautiful creatures, birds. It is, therefore, important that you get rid of these creatures as soon as possible from the attic.
How Do We Get Rid of Them?
Traps will work best here. First, ensure that all the openings are sealed with materials that they cannot chew, steel preferably or simply repair all the entry points. After all that is done, you can easily trap and remove them from your property. The only safe and quick way to get rid of them is by use of traps. Do not think of squirrel repellant or poison because that may not be effective. Besides, there is no effective poison or repellent designed for squirrels.
Prevention is Better Than a Cure
It is easier to keep squirrels away from getting into your property than actually removing them. Do not create them an attraction site such as fruit trees or bird feeders in your compound. This is crazy but it is better to cut down all of them. It is also necessary to seal all the unnecessary openings within your house. Squirrels are a fun of attics. They also love to chew, the pipes, wires, name them, in the attic. They are very destructive.
